History of Chaplet Cottage

Chaplet is one of the remaining, original miners cottages in Healesville. It was established during the gold rush of the 1890s. It was known as The Willows, because of the lovely specimen that featured in the garden originally.

The Hetherton family owned the cottage from 1906 until the youngest child, Dolly (Dorothy) passed away in 1993 at 94. She was born in Healesville in 1899. Her father, John and mother, Harriet are buried in the Healesville cemetery.

In the 70s, the original cottage had a lean-to attached to the back including a bathroom, laundry and small living space.

Recently, this beautiful home was at risk of being demolished and replaced with units – a distressing prospect for locals who feared the history and local charm of the dwelling would be lost forever.
